About Smart Goblin

Smart Goblin wants to know what really goes on inside a company, behind the numbers. He hunts for new businesses that make the goods and services he loves, and keeps an eye on the ones he already owns.

His motto: invest, don’t trade.

Companies write long reports about themselves. Smart Goblin reads every page and turns each one into a short story about the business, so you don’t have to wade through 100 pages of filings.

His favorite color is green, as it is the color of plants that grow. Smart Goblin likes things that grow.

What this site is, and isn’t

Smart Goblin summarizes SEC filings with AI and publishes the summaries here. Every summary links back to the original filing on SEC.gov. The key figures next to each summary are not written by AI: they come from the company’s own financial data in the filing, and how we compute key figures explains what they mean and how we check them. What the summaries cover lists what the goblin looks for when he reads a filing.

The goblin is a reader, not a financial adviser. Nothing here is investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell anything. The summaries are written by AI and may contain mistakes, so check the original filing before you rely on anything important.

The goblin is not an AI agent to talk to, but complements one, please forward any further questions about the filings to your favorite AI.

Who’s behind it

Smart Goblin is made by Jussi Kujala. My motivations are the same as the goblin’s: to understand the businesses rather than watch their share price. Previously I wrote much of the machine learning stack behind Unity Ads.

Smart Goblin is in beta and feedback is welcome: use Feedback in the menu, or write to datataide@gmail.com. You can also find me on LinkedIn.
